SHANE TAYLOR: My Little World
By Bing Turkby
Shane Taylor gives us another well-crafted collection of mellow, intimate songs, and on this release is joined by Jean Smith on backing vocals. Self-recorded in his Te Aroha home, Taylor shuns most modern technology in favour of playing all the instruments himself, directly into a Yamaha AW4416 recorder. This gives him a clean digital track, but removes the temptation to over-edit, as can often be the case when you use a full-featured computer recording setup. No auto-tune, no copied and pasted choruses, just a faithful representation of his skillful playing. His one big concession to technology is the 'two finger' drum patterns he plays on his drum machine. As with his last release, on some songs this can be a little jarring. The drums don't sound horrible - and crucially, they are played in time - they just sometimes sound a little too like a drum machine, and I'd love to hear him with a decent session drummer. Taylor has written a great set of songs here, and his cruisy vocal delivery matches well with his tasteful guitar playing. The lyrics deal with the issues facing a Kiwi everyman, the joys and tragedies of everyday life.
